Tall, slender and strong, bamboos grow together in arched cathedrals carpeted with slippery blonde dry leaves. As the wind moves through them, they creak, groan and snap mysteriously, their leaves shivering like long green fingers.
As children we were always being warned of how snakes loved to hide in their cool, dry interiors, but we escaped into their dappled depths barefooted anyway, into the beautiful soft light that filtered through the leaves, out of the glare of the tropical sun.
